8. Possible Mechanism by which tumour cells escape vasculature and establish metastases identified

A recent article published in the Journal Cancer Cell has reported how a particular chemokine released by metastatic colon cancer cells binds to a particular receptor in the endothelial cells of the vasculature thereby triggering increased permeability of the vessels through specific signalling pathways. 1. We all believe that our hearts cannot regenerate once it is cut. However an animal study in 2011 showed that the neonatal heart in 1 day old mice had the ability to regenerate after it was surgically resected while this regenerative potential was lost by 7 days of age. This study suggests that mammalian hearts appear to have a transient regenerative capability.

2. Did you know that scientists have come closer to eradicating malaria? They postulate that by injecting certain modified genetic elements, known as homing endonuclease genes, or HEGs into the mosquitoes, we will be able to shut down the genetic pathways needed for malarial transmission. Another important aspect is that these HEGs could be transmitted from this mosquito to its successive generations also.
