DIRECTOR, MCGOWAN INSTITUTE FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE
The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) invite applications and nominations for the position of director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Established in 2001, the institute is focused on exploiting the vast potential of tissue engineering and other techniques aimed at repairing damaged or diseased tissues and organs. The institute provides a single base of operations for a network of nearly 230 scientists and clinical faculty working to develop tissue engineering, cellular therapies, and artificial and biohybrid organ devices. This multidisciplinary team approach includes affiliated faculty from 31 academic departments. The institute also enjoys vibrant and productive external regional partnerships with organizations such as the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative. Through its affiliation with UPMC, the McGowan Institute has access to one of the nation’s largest and most highly ranked academic health care systems. The institute’s overall mission includes the development of innovative clinical protocols; pursuit of commercial transfer of its technologies; and education and training of the next generation of scientists, clinicians, and engineers who will advance the field toward the ultimate goal of patient benefit.
The ideal candidate for the position of McGowan Institute director will have an international reputation for innovative research, a distinguished track record of research support and publications, and demonstrated leadership experience. The institute director will be expected to provide visionary leadership for all aspects of the institute, including education, research, clinical activities, finance, and philanthropy. Candidates should be committed to large, team-based, multidisciplinary, and translational research; candidates should qualify for the academic rank of professor with tenure. The McGowan Institute director will report to the dean of the medical school.
